Sorry guys for the lack of updates, the tour has just been non-stop.
The tournament finished on Saturday, 5th of July where the team won both their games. Unfortunately, it was not enough for the U16's, who their second game by a single run and their third game also by one run in the last inning. Needing to win the fourth and fifth game to force a 2-2 series, the Expo's had come down from 3-8 to level the game 8-8 in the bottom of the 7th with loaded bases and 2 out, before Mitch Daly hit a deep fly ball that was snagged by the left fielder on the run backwards to tie the match and force an unwinnable series for the U16's. However, the team came out after the day off with their hosts and friends on July 4th to win by a single run and have a final series result of 2-1.
The U18's came out into the second game fired up after such an amazing performance in the first game, and again, the two teams were run for run and the Expo's ended up holding onto a single run to lead the series 2-0. With the series on the line in the third game, the Redlands 909ers came out twice as the Expo's, and despite the Aussies scoring four runs in the first inning including a out-of-park home run by Zane, Redlands managed to score twice as many runs, including two out-of-park home runs to Jeremiah Hutchner, one of which was well over the 360 foot right-centre fence. Despite getting hit like this, Chris Anderson continued to battle through pitching before being replaced by Nathan Tyak. The final score in game 5-9
The team turned themselves around though for the fourth game where James Goodworth pitched a spectacular game and although the 909ers batted strongly, the Expo's put pressure on the Americans forcing errors and hitting all night, winning a high scoring ball game 12-7.
The final game on Saturday was a scratch match, but neither team treated it like one as Zane came on to pitch and finished off an amazing tournament, with the Expo's holding on to a 1 run lead, which just about summed up the whole tournament. The U18's won their series 4-1.
The winners of the Brain Jimenez award for best and fairest for the Expo's were Matthew Dawson for his strong performance as a catcher and consistent batting and Nathan Huang for reliable situational hitting and pitching probably close to 300 for the tournament.
Today the team said goodbye to their host families as it was a very silent bus trip to San Pedro, but before we could settle in, the boys were rushed into a clinic hosted by San Pedro HS. The day finished at 5:30 as a small party was hosted by one of the families as we prepare for a one-off game vs San Pedro tomorrow afternoon.
Expo's then play two other high schools before leaving back to Australia.
Wish us luck!
