Today was a late start of midday for the Expo's players before a two hour training clinic was taken place at Redlands High School fields in searing heat, with a couple of players feeling the heat with dehydration.
By 5:30pm, the players were rested and ready to have the first match of the tournament with the U16's players kicking off. Nathan Hass started the pitching effort and came off after two innings with a sore elbow, but conceding no runs. Nathan Huang then came on to relieve, battling dehydration eventually had to be replaced by Upcroft, who was thrown in midway through the 4th inning with the scores tied at 5-5. Expo's scored a run in the 5th followed by Redlands counter punching three runs in the bottom of the innings, but the Australian's battery tied up the ball game in the top of 6 to bring the scores to 8-8. The game finished with a couple of great defensive plays from both sides to have the marathon 3 hour game finish tied 8-8 after 7 innings.
The game was followed immediately by the U18's who started with a bang, scoring 4 runs in the first innings, but Redlands counter punched with two runs in both the bottom of the first and second. Like the U16's, the teams counter punched each other throughout the game and went into the bottom of 6th with Expo's 8-6 up. The Expo's only conceded one more run in the 6th inning before shutting Redlands down in the bottom of 7 to win 8-7.
The game's highlights included a backwards diving catch by James to prevent a possible two runs, doubles to a handful of players and an amazing 120 pitch lone performance from Matty Alphabet who had only been throwing up the previous day from dehydration.
Tomorrow the U18's play at 9:30am and the U16's play straight after. Wish the boys the best of luck!
